Amy shares her tips about how to reduce the stress of moving in this Local Lifestyles video.

Get your supplies!

If you are a corporate relocation, they will handle everything. If you are using a moving company, many companies will give you boxes to use. You can also check with recycling centers to see if they have any large cardboard boxes you can have.

Check with your local newspaper offices to see if they will let you have the ends of the newsprint rolls to use for packing paper.

Organize!

Assign each room in your new house a color, then as you pack seal each box with a matching roll of colored duct tape. Make sure and mark what room the box will be going to, not where it came from.

Label!

Label the boxes on two different sides and on the top so no matter how it’s packed you’ll be able to see what’s inside.

Number!

Create a numbered list and assign each box a number, along with a description of what is inside (or ask us about our color-coded binder system!).

Prioritize!

Prioritize your boxes for when to open them.

  • Priority A – Essentials (stuff you’ll need right away; pack and load these last!)
  • Priority B – Stuff you’ll need within the first week or month (e.g. seasonal clothes)
  • Priority C – Stuff you don’t need right away (in fact, it may sit in the box for half a year or more!)
